Position Overview
Sunray ISD is seeking a highly organized, solutions-oriented Director of Maintenance, Operations, and Transportation to lead and oversee district operations that ensure safe, efficient, and well-maintained learning environments. This position supervises facilities, custodial services, grounds, transportation, and safety operations while supporting district goals through effective planning, compliance, and resource management.
The ideal candidate is a proactive leader who builds strong teams, manages systems effectively, and prioritizes student and staff safety.
Primary Responsibilities
Facilities, Maintenance & Operations
- Oversee maintenance, custodial, and grounds departments to ensure clean, safe, and functional campuses
- Develop and implement preventative maintenance plans for all district facilities and equipment
- Coordinate repairs, work orders, and facility improvement projects
- Conduct regular campus inspections to ensure compliance with safety, health, and building standards
- Oversee management of district utilities, energy usage, and facility systems
Transportation Services
- Supervise transportation department to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient bus operations
- Ensure compliance with state and federal transportation regulations
- Oversee bus routes, scheduling, driver training, and fleet maintenance
- Monitor driver certification, safety training, and required documentation
Safety & Compliance
- Support district-wide safety initiatives and emergency preparedness
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, TEA, DOT, fire codes, etc.)
- Assist in development and implementation of district safety plans and procedures
- Coordinate inspections and corrective actions related to safety concerns
Leadership & Personnel Management
- Supervise and evaluate MOT staff, including hiring, training, and performance management
- Build strong working relationships with principals and campus leaders
- Promote a culture of accountability, professionalism, and teamwork
- Provide ongoing training to improve staff effectiveness
Budget & Operations Management
- Develop and manage department budgets
- Monitor expenditures and recommend cost-effective solutions
- Assist with long-range planning for facility and transportation needs
- Work with vendors and contractors; manage bids and contracts as appropriate
Other Duties
- Respond to emergencies and urgent facility or transportation issues as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent
Qualifications
Required:
- High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred)
- Minimum of five years experience in facilities, maintenance, operations, or transportation (school district experience strongly preferred)
- CDL or ability to obtain CDL
- Experience supervising staff and managing multiple departments
- Knowledge of building systems, maintenance practices, and transportation operations
- Strong organizational, leadership, and communication skills
Preferred:
- Experience in a public school setting
- Knowledge of TEA, UIL, and school compliance requirements
- Experience with budget management and long-range planning
